Track, Field, and Hobbits

IMG_4071-2

Well, here it is: the first pod/blog after my decision to be online less… which, for now, really just means writing less. Like I said in the previous blog, I’ve really become too aware of my need to overanalyze everything I do, distill it into extensive written form, and then share it with those silly enough to want to read it. Even this short paragraph feels both superfluous and necessary— I guess after 10+ years of this thing, I’m just too used to providing as much context to my clothes (and life) as possible. Baby steps!

Anyway, here are some photos of what Spencer and I talked about on the pod. There are those Tiger Stripe pants from Gator that I passed on during that impromptu visit with my pals (who all bought stuff). You can see Spencer’s fun shirt and gab jacket that he wore to Serhan’s Track & Field day; I’ve supplemented it with some of my saved “athletic” inspo. It’s not a POV that I’ve delved into, but hey, maybe that’s something for next year. After all, I didn’t hate being Sporty for an afternoon!

Of course, the best part was changing into my Hobbit look for Serhan and Bilbo Baggins’ joint birthday. I’ve done my rain cape with Country Tailoring before, but not with my hooded Ren Faire cloak. I don’t think I’ll do that again anytime soon (the cape is a bit too “wanderer” to be sartorial), I thought the ensemble was very fun. It’s important to remember that Hobbits aren’t medieval but rather have a vaguely 1800s English countryside look— just with long capes, swords, and no shoes.

And oh yeah, there’s that Drake’s trunk show where I didn’t buy anything. I have too much stuff! I did make up for it by being my pal Josh’s sales associate for the evening, taking him through the different Drake’s chores and game jackets, pushing him to consider a navy blazer. I also explained the casual effect that comes from patch pockets (over jetted) , swelled edges (over pick stitching), and textured cloth (over overly fine worsteds). He didn’t buy anything, but his mind is cooking.

I think that’s enough writing for now. Enjoy!

Really cool, but the waist was just too big! I still don’t have a tailor, which certainly puts a wrench in things…

I tried on a 40s linen BB sack (with patch pockets) which, with the pinstripe suit trousers, B&L Sagans, and merch tee, felt very “Alfargo’s”. I added Arthur’s straw cattleman for good measure!

The Drake’s soirĂ©e was fun! It’s been a while since there’s been a proper menswear event. The brand is a bit more IYKYK, which made the attendees have more of a niche, “hyper-enthusiast” vibe compared to the more general appeal of Buck Mason.

Of course, Buck Mason was indeed represented by Brock, Brandon, and Carl.

Junyin and Ryan were in town! I wonder what parts of LA they’ll capture for their editorial…

As expected, the shot put did not go very far at all.

The whole thing reminds of when Spencer and I went to the Tracksmith pop-up at Rowing Blazers.

Maybe I should do more sporty looks…
We’ve shared it before, but here’s that Mister Freedom track jacket. Super cool!

I miss having a purple cord suit…

The cape over the sportcoat is an important part of hobbit attire.
Maybe I do have to do it more often.

Amazing.
