While I have gotten extremely lucky buying suits at Goodwill, eBay always seems to hold up, especially if you want something ivy! Unlike 1930’s suits or modern Ring Jacket suits, vintage pieces from the 1960s-1970s tends to be fairly cheap and readily available. Last time we talked about the tattersall waistcoat, a garment with a checked pattern that instantly screams vintage when it’s worn with a suit or separates. For those of you looking for a throwback ivy style, the tattersall is for you. However, we here at Street x Sprezza are always looking for ways to look even older. Nothing screams 1930’s than a two-tone, patch pocket vest; unfortunately, they’re extremely rare to find in perfect vintage condition. When we heard that Simon James Cathcart was about to reproduce one in a heavy flannel, we jumped on it right away.
One word, three syllables: tattersall. It’s the perfect odd vest to add to your wardrobe if you want to give yourself a vintage pop! Leave those plain tweed waistcoats at home; this is how you do it.
I’m always on the lookout for cheap, vintage suits. You’re guaranteed to find great suits at vintage stores like Joyride or from sellers like Benny, but there’s nothing like the feeling like scoring a great piece at a thrift store. If you look hard enough and have great patience, you can definitely find some cool stuff! And sometimes, you’ll find it on a sale day where your suit will cost $3.
Drake’s London is one of my favorite RTW companies that I’ve discovered during the course of my blogging. I think I’ve mentioned it many times (here especially), but their ties are probably the closest I’ve seen to 1930’s style ones especially due to the fact that they are usually untipped with handrolled edges. Overall, I’ve been a fan of the Drake’s style and I decided to dress in their style for this blog post! Not every brand (or blog) can advocate these three pieces to be worn together: a sportcoat, denim, and a sweater vest.
There are a lot of controversial things that this blog advocates. Spear point collars, collar bars, high rise trousers, and white socks are just a few of those pieces! Whether you wear these things together or incorporate one, you end up with a cool vintage look that sets your sartorial game apart from everyone else. Now it’s time to talk about another addition to “Ethan’s Favorite Things”: the fair isle sweater vest.
The last time I went into downtown Los Angeles, I shot some new friends and wore some classic menswear, ranging from ivy style to a modern interpretation of 1930’s tailoring. However, I decided to change things up this time. I thought I would be fun to show more of our casual side, this time even more dressed down than our previous post on vintage casual. Our plans for the Broad didn’t work out, so we were able to explore and shoot next door at the wonderfully photogenic Walt Disney Concert Hall.
I know that we focus on tailoring a lot on this blog, but I think its time that we explore the seldom seen side of Golden Era Style: casual.
<Drake’s is a company that we’ve referenced many times through the course of this blog. For those of you who are familiar with the company, they first got their start in the 1970’s selling ties and pocket squares. 30 years later, the company has expanded their product offering! They’ve begun to offer shirts, sportcoats, sweaters, and (now) high-rise pants! To celebrate their latest products and the opening of their first American store, I decided to do an “Inspiration for Less” based on their newly released Fall 2016 look book.
